Hi Peter,
Unfortunately when I reached Shiroyama, the cafe you referred to was closed. Otherwise, yes – I’d say it’s an unexpected haven!
How did you get down from Shiroyama? Did you retrace your steps or go off the side like I did?

It was hot and humid and I had a similar experience in getting somewhat lost at the same time as stumbling across a notice that warned to be beware of bears…who knew that Japan had bears?!! I didn’t but do now..anyway I just wanted to say that even though the hike is challenging in that heat.. once you do get to the top of Mt Shiroyama there is a great reward in the makeshift cafe/hangout serving great mushroom soup and oden, beer, snow cones and other special stuff…it’s worth the pain

That sounds about right! It was a beautiful route….when there was a route to speak of 😉

Looks like you went all the way up to Mt Takao to Mt Shiroyama (城山) and descended a little-used route into Sagamihara! That was definitely a big hike, so well done!

Hey Brad,
Oh yeah! Go for the onsen! Ha ha! They’re very unique to Japan, and I’m sorry that I missed out on this iconic experience. Enjoy!

Takao was recommended by a local for a great trail run close to Tokyo. I am very comfortable doing 20-30 mile trail runs, but after putting in 15 mile days WALKING on concrete over the past four days in 87F/30C heat COUPLED with your experience captured on video on Takao, I might just go for a massage and a hot bath (I have one tat, but nothing a large bandaid can’t cover!). Thank you for the video…it pointed me in the direction of the nearest onsen vice hike.

Hey Mike,
MAN – you were right in the middle of it all, staying next to Shinjuku! I must admit I kind of enjoyed being a bit out of the way of it all. Next time, try Kichijoji! Very trendy neighbourhood. 🙂
