It’s really a budget friendly and beautiful destination. After traveling around the world for more than a decade, I think I appreciate my country more. It’s really clean, green and very safe.

This article has awakened a need to find that part of my heritage.

My dad and his brother were taken from their home in Riga during the Nazi occupation in 1941. After the war, he married my mom. I was born in Hamburg and we came to the US as “DP’s” – a derogatory term for Displaced Persons.

After the collapse of Communism, my father began making plans to go back and visit Riga. He often spoke of how he would walk the streets of his beloved Riga in his dreams. His plans were shaping up to go back to his homeland in the summer of 1992, 51 yrs. after he was taken away. In October of 1991, my father dropped dead of a massive heart attack.

After reading this article, I’m thinking maybe I need to go to Latvia, not only for myself, but my dad too.

Thank you

We have Northern Europe on our list when it’s Spring. Looking forward to Latvia & Estonia. Great post.

Thank you so much for commenting, Ilona!
I’m so glad that you resonated with my observations, given your Latvian heritage and experience. And yes, with more and more people speaking English, it is quite easy to get around.
And Stockholm to Riga would be reverse sticker shock, indeed! Suddeny everything would be so affordable 😉

I’ve grown up in the States, but was born in Latvia, and return to visit family every two or so years. The only time I hear of Latvia in the English speaking world is when TV writers need an obscure country to mention where no one will question the validity of the details (my American husband was shocked to learn that there is in fact a Latvian Orthodox Church as mentioned in Seinfeld). I truly wish that it would show up on more travel lists, especially since they’re making great strides in making it more accessible for foreigners by adding English translation every where. Totally agree with your characterization, plus I’ve now added a few extra to see items on my own list thanks to your exploration.

Side note – last trip we did the reverse and came from Stockholm to Riga, I would call that reverse sticker shock.
