I am a Hawthorn supporter so i enjoyed the grand final even more last year.
You are right when you say footy stops the nation. I am living in Dublin and even over here a lot of the pubs had the afl grand final on live. Aussies are like magnets to pubs around the world and there was a great buzz in the pub on grand final day.
Thanks again for your report

I’ve never seen My Fair Lady, but I have seen a friend’s photos from race day and I can tell you it is definitely a spectacle!

Melbourne Cup really is like My Fair Lady, by the looks of the outfits! NOW…I’m even more intrigued! (smiles)

And thank you shuttleman58 for the clarification of the oval field…it was difficult to tell on the “telly” (I’m learning to spell as well as speak Aussie)!

You said: I’m guessing that people won’t be wearing white gloves and elaborate hats at the Melbourne Cup – much less singing – so I’m basically starting with a blank slate

Have never been but have watched a lot of it on the telly..

There is OFTEN a lot of singing (but usually very off key drunken revelry)
Fashion is always GREAT!hl=en&q=melbourne+cup+fashion&gbv=2

Unless you like to be part of a 110,000 plus crowd, surrounded by drunks, not being able to see the races and queuing for 20 minutes to take a leak it may not be for you!!

As a really strong Geelong supporter my heart is still bleeding…….

Just a couple of spelling thoughts. I reckon footie is usually spelt “footy” here and tele is “telly”.

Sorry to be pedantic but may as well educate you to be “proper Aussies” early.

I really enjoy your blog and look forward to it every week. It is always a great read. Would be interested to know of your medium to longer term plans to stay in Oz???

Apologies in advance for any spelling mistakes, it is easy to leave yourself open LOL….

The field is oval, by the way, not round, as it is played on cricket fields. Glad you enjoyed the experience
