Hi Anne,
I definitely recommend getting off the train to enjoy some of the destinations along the way! Usually another train comes along in a few days, but it depends on the route and the time of year. Seat61.com is a good place to start any research about train trips around the world.

Hi Mujahid,
Yes, this journey isn’t for everybody! But you also don’t have to do the entire thing in one go, as we did. Most people get off the train for a few days at various stops to break up the journey and see something along the way. (And shower, and eat, etc!)

I wanted to go for this adventure but it seems that it is not good for me. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience.

Hi Abby,
Yes! You can totally get off the train and spend a few nights on land along the way!
The most popular stop on this route for people to disembark for a few days is at Lake Baikal (the deepest and most ancient lake on earth).
The only reason we didn’t make any stops is because we were on a tight schedule with the Ultimate Train Challenge; traveling from Lisbon to Saigon in just 30 days.
Enjoy your trip!

I am planning a trip with a friend of mine for this fall doing the reverse of what you did and starting in Beijing and ending in Moscow. Really just nervous for the lack of showers! There was no option to stay at the stops longer, perhaps overnight? That’s a bummer. Anyway, loved this! Thanks!

Hi Stefan,
YES! The fall is glorious. I’m sure the spring offers quite a show, but if I had it to do over again, I’d do it in September again. Enjoy your ride!

So much helpful info in this post for me. Just started the beginning stages of planning my Trans-Siberian.

Wasn’t sure if I wanted to go in the spring or the fall but seeing your photos of the fall colors has convinced me – fall it is!

Thanks for the helpful post!

Hi Ayan,
I’m generally an adrenaline junkie myself(!), but this is a different kind of adrenaline doing something like the Trans-Siberian (and the Ultimate Train Challenge itself). It’s the thrill and adrenaline of travel, new things, and finding your way in foreign lands and cultures. Whereas a skydive lasts a few minutes, travel adventures can last up to a lifetime!

i hope id be able to do this in the future.
id still classify it as an adventure… weird because i normally associate adventure with adrenaline. =)
