Even then Kuta was an Aussie playground, so we headed for the hills, just like you, and to Ubud: it looks a LOT bigger and much changed now, going by your pictures.

My favourite memory of the time was watching a monkey that had the “job” of going up trees on a long rope and breaking off the coconuts for his human to collect when they fell. The monkey had a friend who was a dog (as you do) and they used to play-fight together. Sometimes the dog would have the upper hand, sometimes the monkey did, but it always ended on good terms … except once.

On that occasion, the dog was DEFINITELY winning – he had the monkey by the throat and was not letting go. We were just wondering if we should break it up when the monkey, all the while screaming in a strangled kind of a way, reached back down the dog with its lower hand (their feet being more like hands than feet), grabbed the dog by the, erm, “back wheels” shall we say, and squeezed. Hard.

The dog yelped in pain, let go of the monkey and bolted off to give ’em a good lick in peace. The monkey stood up, looked at us, and positively strutted off with a swagger Mick Jagger would envy.

I tell you, the tears were almost running down my leg I was laughing so much. Happy times. Though probably not so much for the dog.

Monkeys, scooters, yoga, Kismet, walking (on broken sidewalks), a memorable ‘healing’ experience, and cool expats. What’s not to love about Ubud? 😉

Hey Sarah,
I found the scooter traffic 10 times more congested in Vietnam! Though I was in Saigon; in a smaller town more comparable in size to Ubud perhaps it’s not quite as hectic.

Bali is still very much on our ‘to do’ list for countries in SE Asia. We actually found the traffic very similar in Vietnam. We saw 3 collisions in our first 2 days! Even after renting scooters in Thailand we decided not to risk it.

Hey Jane,
Well – of all people, I would say, you’d know!!! 😉 Any yoga studios in particular that you liked in Ubud?

At least it’s aptly named.

The smaller rooms downstairs tend to offer the better quality classes but yeah, there are definitely better places for yoga in Ubud!

Hey Stephanie,
Glad I’m not the only one who decided that walking was safer/better! 😉
