Wow! You covered quite some territory during the pandemic. Must have been interesting to see how different countries and cultures dealt with it.

Hi. yes, i was stuck in Kenya for 3 months after they closed the land borders and airport. also without a home to go back to, I took a KLM evac flight to Amsterdam, eventually and I ended up in ‘open countries’.. Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia (had to isolate for 2 weeks), then Turkey and then Mexico. where i am again.

Hi Ratna,
Thanks! I wrote the article out of personal curiosity, so I’m happy to know others are equally curious.

But one bit of travel shaming: why does Gabriel object to a _test_?

Hi Jesse,
I know a few other travelers who got “stuck” in New Zealand, and had their visas extended repeatedly….frankly, I’m jealous. 😉
I would love to be “stuck” in New Zealand for a year, especially given that there are practically zero cases there and my understanding is it’s pretty much business as usual (minus tourists).
Enjoy!

Hi Rob,
Glad you found a good base of operations to wait out the pandemic. Seems like a good plan. 🙂

I came from Gabe’s link. My wife and I were in Thailand last January when we noticed that we couldn’t find any N95 masks to use for our cave exploration in Phang Nga. They were sold out everywhere! That’s when we realized how serious this virus and the reaction to it was. We decided to head to New Zealand, with a quick 2 week stop in Malaysia first. We were able to explore Boreno, Sabah and Mabul Island with a tiny fraction of the normal tourist crowd. It was great to have those areas all to ourselves, but we were concerned about the tourism operators losing a huge amount of business. When we arrived in New Zealand at the end of February 2020, they coincidentally had their first covid case as well. We bought an old carpenter van and converted it into a self contained campervan, but a week later the government announced the lockdown. We were lucky to find a nice Air BnB on a 200 acre farm and spent the 6 weeks of lockdown there. Since then we’ve been travelling all over New Zealand in our campervan and have had normally overcrowded places all to ourselves. The NZ government has extended our visitor visa twice. SO what was initially supposed to be a 3 month stay has turned into a year and we’re hoping for yet another extension.

Spending this winter traveling the US in an RV didn’t seem like the best thing. Then we got lucky and found a great place for a west coast base so we are settled down until things calm down a bit.
