I haven’t had trouble with the adjustable strap (I have had to adjust it perhaps once every couple of months of daily use), but I do echo your observation about having to zip up the side pockets carefully.
Also, my water bottle isn’t smooth at the bottom, so I’ve ripped an extra large hole with the edges of it. Good thing there are two bottle pockets!

The only downsides I’ve come across are, 1) the adjustable strap is “slippery” and will need constant readjusting, so I used a safety pin to secure the strap, and 2) the mesh in the two water bottle side pockets will get stuck in the zippers if you’re not careful. I ripped a decent-sized hole in mine!
