If that isn\u2019t bad enough, there are lots of different ways that those expenses can unnecessarily inflate (aside from the actual ticket cost) like airline fees, expensive airport stuff, and more. Here are some fees and costs to be aware of when flying.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Actual Ticket<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airfares are a moving target, with fares constantly changing. And while there are many theories about how and when to get the best airfare prices, it\u2019s hard to know if you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting a good deal. I like to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#airfare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airfare-alert tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to understand price trends and make sure I got the best price (even after I\u2019ve already paid for it!).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you want to save even more money, you can buy your ticket using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/frequent-flyer-miles-travel-hacking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequent flyer miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxes and Surcharges<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After going through the process of making sure you\u2019re getting the best deal on your flight and staying within your budget, you get the the final payment page\u2026and suddenly taxes and surcharges have been tacked on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some airlines include taxes and surcharges in their initial quote, while others don\u2019t. It\u2019s infuriating. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re booking with frequent flyer miles, it\u2019s important to remember these too, because your flight isn\u2019t entirely free; you\u2019re still on the hook for taxes.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent Flyer Mile Cancellation Fee<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One time, I booked a flight with miles and then had to cancel. When I called in to cancel, I was told there was a $150 fee just to re-deposit the miles to my account. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes this can be avoided just by canceling the reservation and leaving the miles in limbo, and then calling in on the same reservation code to use the same miles for different travel. Basically, instead of canceling the flight and re-depositing the miles, you\u2019re changing the flight (which still entails a fee &#8211; just a lower one). <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reservation Changes and Cancellation Fees<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this isn\u2019t a hidden airline fee, it\u2019s important to remember that when you change a flight reservation, you have to pay a fee, usually somewhere between $30 and $200.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have reason to believe you may need to change or cancel your flight, and it\u2019s a route that tends to fill up (ie: you can\u2019t wait until the last minute to buy a cheap non-refundable fare), consider a more flexible \u201ctier\u201d of airfare that allows changes. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booking Over the Phone<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you prefer to book your flights over the phone, or if you\u2019re using a miles strategy that requires you to speak to a person, you may be charged an extra fee for this (as opposed to doing it online).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If online booking isn\u2019t your thing and you want a good price for airfare, consider using a travel agent. They\u2019ll do the heavy lifting for you, and you can work with them over the phone and\/or in person. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel Insurance<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some airlines sneak travel insurance into the cost of the flight, and you must go back to a screen to specifically DE-select the insurance. I once found it was so masked in fine print it took me half an hour to locate where to deselect it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-insurance-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives to getting insurance through your airline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airport Parking<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes parking at the airport and leaving it there is the most affordable option. But pay attention to your dates and read the fine print. I once used long-term airport parking thinking I was paying a per-day rate; I was charged for a whole extra week because my car stayed one day of that week.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airport Junk<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you clear security, the airport basically has you hostage while you wait for your flight. So of course everything is overpriced. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid buying food by eating before you go to the airport and\/or packing sealed (non-liquid-y) snacks in your carry-on. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring an empty water bottle to fill at a water fountain once you pass security. You can even ask the flight attendant to refill it for you once you\u2019re in the air &#8211; which saves wasting those tiny plastic disposable cups they hand out and can&#8217;t reuse. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to kill time? The shops are for browsing only, unless you want to pay a premium. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checked Baggage Fees<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that checked bags cost extra with many airlines may be common knowledge, but sometimes there are ways around it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some loyalty and miles programs give you a free checked bag when you book through them. Read the fine print, and advocate for your rights! I booked one such flight with an airline-branded credit card that allowed me a free checked bag and lounge access; they still tried to charge me for the bag at check-in, and when I insisted it was covered they had to ask a supervisor. (I eventually got it). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course you could always try traveling with only a carry-on. &nbsp;Not sure? You don\u2019t want to pay a penalty fee just because your bag is a few pounds too heavy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes all you need is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more wiggle room. In that case, I like to use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#carry-on-hack\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fanny-pack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airline Meals and Drinks<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone are the days when you could safely assume drinks and meals were complimentary. More and more airlines, especially the plethora of budget airlines now available, are charging for meals, snacks, and drinks (even non-alcoholic drinks sometimes). Even long flights charge for meals, depending on the airline. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I once got on a long-haul flight that claimed to offer meal service on the ticket, only to discover it was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meal service \u2013 for a fee<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At 36,000 feet and with a grumbling stomach I didn\u2019t have much choice but to overpay for a crappy airline meal.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring your own water bottle and snacks to avoid these charges. Or, if you have no other option or are on a long-layover, buy a to-go meal in the airport. It\u2019s still overpriced, but it will likely be better quality than what you\u2019ll get on the plane. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you simply can\u2019t leave Fido at home, it\u2019s important to call the airline directly to make sure there\u2019s a spot for him, since only a certain number of pets are allowed on flights. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, this also means that in addition to Fido\u2019s ticket, you\u2019ll likely need to pay a charge for booking over the phone.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-Flight Movie\/Entertainment Devices<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It varies by airline, but some of them charge for entertainment devices or headsets to watch movies in the air.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pillows and Blankets<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring a warm layer to wear on the plane or use as a makeshift pillow. Some airlines actually charge for this, and frankly, paying to rent an airline pillow or blanket is a low-blow. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payphones<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While payphones are mostly a thing of the the past, they do still exist, in airports and terminals. But who has coins to insert? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beware of using your credit card to make calls! It may seem super convenient, but it comes with a price. I did it once and it was a $150 mistake for a 10-minute call. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Departure Tax<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some countries charge a departure tax whenever someone leaves the country. Some only charge this when you leave by air. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it\u2019s included in the airline ticket, sometimes not. Don\u2019t get caught off-guard at the last second! Hotels are pricey and can sneak extra fees in, and you might not know until you\u2019re checking out and it\u2019s too late. Here are some things to watch out for (in and out of hotels) to keep those fees to a minimum.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid Hotels<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone loves a good hotel, but there are lots of affordable alternatives, and I don\u2019t just mean AirBnBs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hostels, for example, often have comfortable options and offer private rooms. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you\u2019re staying for a while, you might consider doing some research when you arrive and renting an apartment. They are overpriced without exception, especially since you can generally walk down the street and buy what you need locally.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodies Outside the Minibar<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes hotels leave a water bottle and some kind of snack on your bedside table. These aren\u2019t in the minibar, so you think to yourself: \u201chow nice of them to leave these out for me!\u201d. Beware though, these are not always complementary, and you\u2019ll be charged for them.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotel parking, while convenient, is super pricey. If you\u2019ve got a car, make sure you check the rates before you book. (And check Google Maps to see if there\u2019s a public lot nearby that you can use instead). One time I got hit with a $30 parking fee for one night. Oof!<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiFi<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This varies by hotel (and airports, too). WiFi isn\u2019t always free. Many hotels have free WiFi in the lobby and common areas, but might charge for it in your room. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good news: if you\u2019re a member of their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/frequent-flyer-miles-travel-hacking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hotel loyalty program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, free premium WiFi is often included. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towels<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In hotels, you usually get free bath towels but they might charge for pool, gym, or beach towels. If you\u2019re staying in a hostel (or super budget hotel), you may even have to pay for a bath towel and soap. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To counteract this, I always have a <\/span><a rel=\"sponsored noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01K1TWYEO\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=www.theprofessionalhobo.com-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01K1TWYEO&amp;linkId=c3dbffd755a36202b474258f6b3ea0ac&amp;tag=www.theprofessionalhobo.com-20\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compact travel towel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with me. It has worked wonders in a huge variety of situations. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currency Exchange<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotels consistently overcharge for currency exchange services. I was given this tip by a hotel concierge, who said I should never use a hotel desk to exchange money. (Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ve got more tips below to do this without breaking the bank).<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone Calls from Your Room<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, calling an outside line from your hotel room phone will always cost an arm and a leg. Just don\u2019t do it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out my tip about <a href=\"#travel-prep\">local SIM cards<\/a> below, and you won\u2019t need to use your hotel phone.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotel Laundry<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting laundry done at a hotel will definitely be overpriced. Go ahead and use shampoo in the bathroom sink and hand wash it!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local coin-operated laundry machines (also sometimes in hostels) are definitely cheaper than hotel laundry, but they\u2019re still an extra cost. Don\u2019t forget the cost of those single-use detergent packs! They\u2019re overpriced and irksome for one load of laundry. Depending on how long you\u2019re there, or if there are other guests you could split costs with, a small pack of detergent from the local grocery store will cost way less.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or just bring a little baggie of (powdered) detergent from home to get you through your trip, and pack sensibly to minimize washing. Unfortunately, it\u2019s always overpriced and often mediocre. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trekking down to the hotel restaurant will get you better food for better prices, and of course you can find even better-priced (and possibly more authentic) food out-and-about. But it definitely comes with its own financial pitfalls. Keep an eye out for these hidden fees so you can save some money. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renting A Car At All<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your needs, there may be a more affordable alternative to renting a car. Use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#car-sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">car-sharing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> service if you just need to get around town. If you\u2019re traveling from destination A to destination B, look into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#ride-sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ride-sharing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s good for the environment as well as your budget. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you are planning a road-trip, look into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#vehicle-relocation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campervan and car relocations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if there\u2019s an opportunity that fits your itinerary. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Car rental insurance will quickly blow up your rental rate. It\u2019s a good idea to be insured, but before you accept their crazy rate as the \u201cresponsible thing\u201d, check your own insurance and credit cards. You may have car rental <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-insurance-guide\/#credit-card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> automatically &nbsp;through those. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Replacement<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a friend who accidentally went swimming with the rental car key fob in his shorts. You\u2019d better believe he won\u2019t make that mistake again! <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuel<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the rental company magnanimously offers to refill the tank at a pre-determined rate, know that the rate isn\u2019t so magnanimous. With a little research you can find a gas station near to your drop-off point that will almost always be cheaper to refill the tank. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra Drivers<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re renting a car, remember that adding additional drivers to the rental agreement sometimes means extra fees. But certain ways of doing so cost more than others. No matter what you do and how you pay, you\u2019re forking out hidden travel fees to convert your money, and more often than not they\u2019re completely invisible to you. Here are the various ways you\u2019ll pay and the hidden fees entailed:<\/span><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Converting Cash<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re walking into a country with the wrong currency in your wallet, you may need to change it. But beware: airport currency exchange counters are (while convenient) exorbitantly overpriced and rife with hidden commissions. Try a local bank branch or a currency exchange counter in town instead.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also make sure you&#8217;re aware of the local scams. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/visiting-kuta-bali\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I fell for them all<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in rapid succession) in Bali, in an almost comical episode. <\/span><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Credit Card Conversion<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the card you use, most credit cards will add on about 2.5% as an automatic currency conversion fee, also known as a foreign exchange fee. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re already abroad with your card, and you\u2019re trying to save on the conversion fee with your credit card company, you may be tempted by some vendors\u2019 offers to charge your purchase in your home currency. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just say no!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These \u201copportunities\u201d usually entail even bigger (and more invisible) charges. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to reduce credit card foreign currency conversion fees is to sign up for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-money-guide\/#credit_card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel credit card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with free foreign exchange. These types of cards often come with other travel-related perks, but also usually come with an annual fee. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do your research to choose the best one for you, and make sure you apply before you actually hit the road. If you do what I did and quit your job to travel, your sudden drop in annual income might prevent you from getting approved. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Debit and ATM Conversion<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just the credit card companies getting their cut of the pie. Banks are in on it too. There are hidden currency conversion fees on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-money-guide\/#atms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ATM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> withdrawals and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-money-guide\/#debit_card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debit card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charges, taken off the top of your transaction as a percentage. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a hidden fee, it\u2019s often the lowest conversion rate you\u2019ll find (except the special exchange-free credit cards I mentioned above). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When using foreign ATMs, make sure they\u2019re bank-affiliated. Private ATMs usually add an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extra hidden fee on top of the currency conversion fee. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit Card Advance Fees and Interest<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few times, I\u2019ve visited places where my debit card wouldn\u2019t work in the ATM machines, and cash was the only option for purchases. So I was forced to make an ATM withdrawal using my credit card. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of whether you\u2019re abroad or at home, this is pricey. You\u2019re charged a credit card advance fee (usually about $5), but that\u2019s the least of it. You\u2019re also charged compounding interest, from the day you make the withdrawal, on your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire credit card balance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s no other option but to make an ATM withdrawal using your credit card, make sure you go online immediately (preferably beforehand) and pay off your card in full plus the withdrawal amount to avoid (or minimize) interest. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveler&#8217;s Cheque Commissions<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-money-guide\/#travelers_cheques\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveler\u2019s cheques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may at one time have been one of the cheapest ways to access your money abroad, fewer and fewer places accept them and they\u2019re harder and harder to cash. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re also not free of fees. And of course there\u2019s always a few extra expenses before you even leave. Here are a few things to remember to include in your budget.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel Visas<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on where you\u2019re going (and where you\u2019re from), you may have to apply for a visa to enter a country. This might not technically be a hidden fee, but some ways to get your travel visa are more affordable than others.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you use a travel visa service, it will be more expensive (though more convenient and less frustrating). Also, some countries allow you to get your visa on arrival, but it may be more affordable to get it ahead of time. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(See also: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/things-before-traveling-abroad\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things To Do Before Traveling Abroad: A Simple Guide to Visas, Documents, and Other Important Things<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Care<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you decide to leave Fido and Fluffy at home, you may need to pay someone to care for them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kennels can be pricey, and you might not want to or be able to burden family or friends with their care. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/the-creative-guide-to-free-or-cheap-accommodation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">house-sitting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is good for free pet care at home as well as free accommodation abroad! Put Fido and Fluffy in the care of a loving house-sitter for the length of your trip, and don\u2019t spend a dime. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cell Phone Roaming<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m still flabbergasted by people who take their cell phones abroad with their home plans, and are surprised when they receive a bill for hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on their return. One little phone call, or just a wee bit of data usage, can mean dramatically overpaying for cellular services abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Click here to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/cell-phone-travel-basics-international-phone-plans-sim-cards-and-more\/\">learn all the ways to connect abroad with your cell phone<\/a> WITHOUT paying roaming charges. Options for both locked and unlocked phones.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, ensure your phone is unlocked (or get an unlocked phone just for travel) and insert a local SIM card &#8211; which you can usually buy at the airport on arrival. Using this technique I spend $10-20\/month on all my cell phone expenses, data included. This average cost takes into account time spent in both inexpensive and pricey countries. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an increasingly popular alternative to buying a local SIM card abroad, you can <\/span>get a data eSIM card. It doesn&#8217;t (usually) give you a phone number, but most people can get by with services like WhatsApp to stay in touch with people using a WiFi or data connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a few favourite eSIM providers, which I discuss in more detail in this comprehensive article about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/finding-the-best-esim-for-international-travel-your-ultimate-guide\/\">International eSIM cards<\/a>, where I compare the top eSIMs on the market. Here\u2019s a few things to watch out for as you\u2019re enjoying your destination so you don\u2019t overspend unnecessarily. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guided Tours<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some guided tours are more expensive than others, and more so than necessary. Research your options and the cost of the average tour in the area before you book anything. In many countries, you can find cheaper tour options on arrival, rather than booking online in advance. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also do a tour through something like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-travel-on-a-budget\/#withlocals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WithLocals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to get a local authentic scoop on your destination. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, consider a free walking tour! It\u2019s not entirely free, as the guides are donating their time for tips, so be generous if the tour is informative and\/or enjoyable. The good news is because they are working for tips, they\u2019ll do their best to make sure you have a good time. <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guruwalk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guruwalk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great worldwide resource for free walking tours. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurant Meals (Location and Timing)<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always nice to eat in a restaurant, but in general it&#8217;s best to avoid restaurants in tourist districts. Those are almost always overpriced.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need (or want) to eat in that area regardless, lunch is often cheaper than dinner, with a similar menu available. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food at Concession Stands<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concession stands in tourist areas and parks are overpriced, hands down. Ever had a hot dog in Central Park? Avoid overpaying by bring your own food or buying food at a local shop down the street instead. <\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At only a couple of bucks a pop it might seem innocuous, but buying water while you\u2019re out and about takes a hit on both your pocketbook \u2013 and the environment. Bottled water is a pet peeve of mine, and I refuse to buy it. Instead, I carry a reusable bottle and fill it up wherever I can. Did you know that in some cultures tipping is actually offensive? In other cultures it\u2019s appreciated, but not expected to the level that many North Americans might be used to doling out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, most restaurant servers outside of North America are paid proper wages, and tips are considered a nice bonus as opposed to a necessity. The obligatory 15-20% tip on meals in North America is uncommon elsewhere in the world.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double-Tipping<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh yes, and while you\u2019re deciding how much to tip your server, check to see if gratuity has already been added to your bill (as is common in tourist areas or with large groups). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a few people (myself included) have double-tipped their servers while traveling and wondered why the servers were so very nice to them on their way out the door.<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxis<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a thing about taking taxis in foreign countries; they\u2019re not always safe, and if you\u2019re in a dodgy taxi, you might be taken the long way around so they can overcharge you. It happens all too easily if you aren\u2019t familiar with your destination.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid overpaying for taxis? Ask a local or the staff at your hotel how much a taxi should cost to your destination before you go. Confirm the rate with the taxi driver before you get in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, the best way to avoid overpaying taxi drivers is to take public transportation, or use a service like Uber. &nbsp;<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Souvenirs<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Souvenirs can be a great way to remember your trip or share the adventure with someone back home. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beware when buying those \u201clocal\u201d trinkets. Often, they\u2019re mass produced elsewhere for next to nothing and then are sold for \u201clocally handmade\u201d prices to gullible tourists. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out several shops before you buy anything. If you see identical things in more than one store, it\u2019s probably not so \u201clocal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget: you can always try to haggle the price down. This is especially true in street markets. Make sure to learn a few phrases in the local language if you\u2019re in a foreign country.
