{"id":1443,"date":"2010-03-11T20:48:28","date_gmt":"2010-03-11T09:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2024-06-19T07:41:07","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T11:41:07","slug":"new-zealand-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/new-zealand-introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"My New Zealand Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kia Ora from New Zealand!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(\u201cKia ora\u201d means hello, goodbye, thanks, you\u2019re welcome, ta, have a nice day, pleasure to meet you, and just about any other friendly expression you can think of in the native New Zealand language and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/maori-culture-in-new-zealand\/\">culture of Maori<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually to be fair, by the time this post goes live, I\u2019ll have left beautiful New Zealand and will be in transit back to my &#8220;home&#8221; in Australia. Alas, it won\u2019t home for much longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I\u2019m getting ahead of myself. You\u2019ll have to stay tuned to find out what my travel plans are for this year\u2026.they\u2019re gonna be good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2010. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content. <\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, I have so many stories to tell about my last week of adventures, so many wonderful things to say about the glorious country of New Zealand. Stay tuned for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-week-in-the-life-of-the-professional-hobo-shooting-a-tv-show\/\">week-in-the-life of yours truly \u2013 while shooting a television show<\/a>, as well as posts on some of the highlights I experienced on the North Island of New Zealand, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/white-island-new-zealands-most-active-volcanic-site\/\">Volcanic Air Safari<\/a>, my first experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/helicopters-sledges-and-jet-boats-oh-my\/\">heli-sledging<\/a> (if you don\u2019t know what it is, you will soon), visiting a natural \u2013 and very hot \u2013 creek, and an epic seven-hour adventure in a cave called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/abseiling-caving-and-spotting-glow-worms-in-waitomo-new-zealand\/\">Lost World<\/a> (which started off with a 100 metre abseil, just to get the juices flowing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just to set the scene for New Zealand, here are some miscellaneous tidbits of information I discovered about the place during my 11 day visit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Organize your next destination before going. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They won\u2019t even let you on the plane to New Zealand if you can\u2019t show proof that you\u2019re leaving (in the form of an onward ticket), and even prove that you have visas sorted for the country you are going to. This is a country fiercely (and justifiably) proud of its small population\u2026there\u2019s no falling off the grid here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/things-before-traveling-abroad\/\">Things to do to Prepare for Traveling, Including the Scoop on Onward Tickets<\/a> <\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Rotorua is the epicentre of Maori culture. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4161_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4161_1-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Nora Dunn, The Professional Hobo, in Rotorua New Zealand\" class=\"wp-image-1446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4161_1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4161_1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4161_1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll post more about this incredibly interesting town that smells (reeks?) of sulphur, but for now I\u2019ll simply say that it is steeped in Maori culture, is a geothermal hotspot, and is basically like Chuck-E-Cheese for adults. Bring lots of money if you like adrenaline adventures.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mammals are completely introduced, and birds never used to fly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4113_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4113_1-475x600.jpg\" alt=\"kiwi bird sign in New Zealand\" class=\"wp-image-1447\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>Before man came to New Zealand, the only mammals that lived here were bats and seals. And believe it or not, many of New Zealand birds also didn\u2019t fly \u2013 they didn\u2019t need to, with no real predators to worry about. Many of these flightless birds are now endangered if not completely extinct \u2013 including the slightly ridiculous looking (but completely loveable) Kiwi bird, which is making a comeback with the help of sanctuaries and reserves. As the national bird of New Zealand, you will see lots of pictures and logos with this cute anatomically bizarre creature.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The national colour is green. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4108_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4108_1-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"greenery in New Zealand\" class=\"wp-image-1448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4108_1-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_4108_1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>Okay, I made this up, but if New Zealand\u2019s national colour isn\u2019t green, it should be. Even after a dry summer, I saw lush green ferns and rolling green hills in every direction. Apparently after a wet winter, the countryside looks like somebody took a bright green highlighter to it.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Silver Ferns are navigational tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the green theme, there are beautiful ferns everywhere, especially dotting waterways and lakes (ferns have even worked their way into the logo for Rotorua). One of the indigenous ferns is called the Silver Fern, which gets its name because the underside of the leaves has a silvery sheen. It glows in the moonlight, and can be used for navigation at night by leaving a trail of leaves. Its Maori name also means \u201cnational pride\u201d.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Look for iSites for travel information. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iSites are all over the country, and are the unbiased resource for travelers to get information and book anything from transportation to accommodation and adventures.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Kiwi hospitality rules. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKiwis\u201d are not only the national bird <strong>and<\/strong> commonly grown fruit in New Zealand, but also the nickname for New Zealanders. They are also among the friendliest and hospitable people I\u2019ve met. Be prepared for impromptu conversations with complete strangers, lots of laughs, and if you\u2019re lucky \u2013 an invitation (or three) to a barbecue you won\u2019t ever want to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although I\u2019m sad to be leaving New Zealand, I\u2019m also fairly sure that this visit was only a brief introduction. In an 11 day whirlwind trip, I managed to make many sincere and deep connections with people who I\u2019m excited to get to know better. And I didn\u2019t even touch half of what this country has to offer; I\u2019m told the South Island is a world unto itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my Kiwi friends: Kia ora, mates!
