While walking through a dense sub-tropical rainforest in Springbrook National Park:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: I wonder how many snakes are in this park.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: Don\u2019t be silly. It\u2019s winter. They\u2019re all hiding. Hibernating probably.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: Hibernating? Do snakes hibernate?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: Not sure. But if they don\u2019t hibernate, they certainly hide in holes somewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: You know, <\/span>Australia is home to the largest number of poisonous and venomous and generally deadly animals by an exponential amount.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: Yeah, but they are all scared of us. And they\u2019re way off in the Australian bush somewhere, not here in the middle of it all.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: Kel. We are at least 50kms from the nearest real town which is still only home to a few hundred people. And we\u2019re 4kms from the bloody parking lot, which was empty when we came! We\u2019re not exactly in a hub of urban life here. A hub of snakes, perhaps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: But it\u2019s winter. The snakes are slow and dopey. They won\u2019t even have the energy to attack. Besides which, they\u2019re not here.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: Why aren\u2019t they here? Snakes like to hang out specifically on paths like these, so they can sun themselves. A startled dopey snake in the middle of our way doesn\u2019t seem like a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: Don\u2019t worry. We won\u2019t see any snakes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: I don\u2019t have much experience with snakes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: Great. That makes me feel better. How are you supposed to save me if you don\u2019t know what to do?! Gaaaawd. I tell you, if I didn\u2019t \u2013 Woah<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Nora comes to dead halt, Kelly crashes into her)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: What?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: Snake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly: Yeah, sure \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nora: No really. In front of us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure enough, a green snake about one meter in length slithered off the path directly in front of us, eyeing us and sticking its tongue out at us the whole way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so began our two days of hikes and camping through Springbrook National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
