I made this short video as a summary of my &#8220;this was 2010&#8221; &nbsp;travel adventures and \u201ce-Christmas Card\u201d of sorts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2010. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Happy Holidays 2010!\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fIp4FPdRxwU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Please <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=fIp4FPdRxwU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> to watch the video if you can\u2019t see it in your browser or email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you who would rather read about my year, here\u2019s the \u201ccoles notes\u201d version of my 2010:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started out in Australia celebrating the New Year with friends in <strong>Victoria<\/strong>, before heading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/australian-seagulls-spider-bites-and-blue-mountains\/\"><strong>Sydney<\/strong> to see the sights<\/a> and stay with some friends I met in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/lightning-ridge-the-black-queen-experience\/\">Lightning Ridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I visited a Canadian friend who moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/why-would-i-want-to-visit-canberra\/\"><strong>Canberra<\/strong><\/a>, Australia\u2019s capital city. Our visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/the-australian-aboriginal-tent-embassy-a-38-year-protest\/\">Aboriginal Tent Embassy<\/a> will be counted as a memory I won\u2019t soon forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it was off to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-week-in-the-life-of-the-professional-hobo-shooting-a-tv-show\/\"><strong>New Zealand<\/strong> to shoot a tv show<\/a>, where in 11 days, I experienced more thrilling adventures than you could probably get through in a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that I got some down-time in Wellington, before checking out more nooks and crannies on the North Island; places like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/the-tongariro-alpine-crossing-new-zealands-best-one-day-hike\/\">Tongariro Crossing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/crater-walking-on-mount-tarawera-new-zealand\/\">Mount Tarawera<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also discovered one of my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/my-favourite-place-in-the-world\/\">favourite places in the world<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/living-at-mana-retreat\/\">Mana Retreat<\/a>, where I volunteered in trade for my accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/financial-travel-tip-84-being-a-first-class-flyer\/\">very long business class flight<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/thoughts-on-and-many-pictures-of-spain\/\"><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/a>, where I checked out the Tapas culture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/volunteering-at-vaughan-town-in-spain-a-cultural-experience\/\">volunteered in trade for my accommodation by speaking English<\/a>, visited the walled city of Toledo, stayed with a family near Madrid where I had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/encountering-the-artist-a-random-experience-in-spain\/\">interesting encounter<\/a>, and sampled the cuisine and grandeur of Segovia &#8211; another walled city with quite a spectacular aqueduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With just a week to spare, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-week-in-germany-and-my-style-of-travel\/\">popped over to southern <strong>Germany<\/strong> to visit a friend<\/a> I had met in New Zealand, who showed me her home town of Ulm and the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I had a date to meet my family in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/paris-highlights\/\"><strong>Paris<\/strong><\/a>, where we saw some sights before heading south to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/winding-our-way-through-the-south-of-france\/\">stay with friends on the Mediterranean<\/a>. We ate amazing food, checked out the markets, and took long drives along the coast. We also saw world heritage sights like Pont de Neuf and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/carcassonne-more-than-just-a-game\/\">Carcassonne<\/a> \u2013 the city that looks like a castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some welcome beach time, it was off to <strong>England<\/strong> with Mum, where we house-sat for a few weeks. We also got around a bit, seeing sights like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/adventures-in-england-london-hampshire-avebury-winchester-york-whitby\/\">London, Avebury, and Winchester<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/books\/view\/1023299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"How to Land House-Sitting Gigs, and Other Forms of Free Accommodation (opens in a new tab)\">How to Land House-Sitting Gigs, and Other Forms of Free Accommodation<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mum and I parted company and I went to York to stay with a fellow travel writer, sample high tea, and visit the coast at Whitby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I hopped on a train to <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong> to check out the Fringe Festival, gawk at &nbsp;random foods the Scottish are willing to deep fry, and drive into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/scotland-the-festivals-the-highlands-the-food-the-weather\/\">Scottish highlands<\/a>. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was surprisingly cooperative, and the hiking was fabulous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ireland<\/strong> was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/arriving-in-ireland\/\">ferry ride away<\/a>, where I reveled in the gorgeous green countryside, saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/ireland-the-causeway-the-gap\/\">Giant\u2019s Causeway<\/a> with its strange rock formations, and admired the sights of Dublin &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/ireland-the-booze-and-the-politics\/\">sampling the local brew too<\/a> of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France wasn\u2019t done with me yet, as I returned to Paris to film the pilot episode for a travel tv show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the crew, we headed to <strong>Nepal<\/strong> to continue filming. I absolutely fell in love with Nepal, and hope to return there soon to further explore this amazing country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of September, I was back in <strong>Australia<\/strong>, on a quest to ride the rails. I rode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/train-travel-the-ghan-from-darwin-to-adelaide-day-one\/\">The Ghan<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/darwin-the-crocs-the-heat-the-attitude\/\">Darwin<\/a> on a three day journey down through the red centre and eventually through to Adelaide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I took the Indian Pacific from Sydney on a four day journey to from Pacific to Indian Oceans; Through Broken Hill and the outback, down to Adelaide with its bustling central market, through Cook (the ghost town with a bustling population of 5), and all the way across the Nullarbor desert to Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After enjoying 24 hours in the incredibly isolated city of Perth, it was back on the train another four days all the way back to Sydney. All in all, I rode 16,000kms of Australia\u2019s rails in about a month, and I didn\u2019t even cover it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m back in <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> now, spending Christmas and New Year\u2019s at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/mana-retreat-video\/\">Mana Retreat<\/a>.
