Eagles playing in the sky.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve said it over and over to people, and now I\u2019m truly seeing and realizing it: Canada has so much to offer. From one coast to the other, there is so much variety, and even great cultural differences everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we came to British Columbia, as a Torontonian I was actually a bit \u201cput off\u201d by the overt friendliness of everybody there. Usually if a stranger said \u201chello\u201d to me on the street in Toronto, I\u2019d assume I was in the process of being mugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in the westernmost province of British Columbia it\u2019s another story.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_Goo1BmTC80U\/RjEEmauL5lI\/AAAAAAAAAEI\/nZrrOrYUY_k\/s1600-h\/IMGP0256.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_Goo1BmTC80U\/RjEEmauL5lI\/AAAAAAAAAEI\/nZrrOrYUY_k\/s200\/IMGP0256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_Goo1BmTC80U\/RjEDPKuL5iI\/AAAAAAAAADw\/FMYqwl0lJEc\/s1600-h\/IMGP0250.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_Goo1BmTC80U\/RjEDPKuL5iI\/AAAAAAAAADw\/FMYqwl0lJEc\/s200\/IMGP0250.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Although every experience in BC has been fantastic, our first introduction to true BC hospitality was on the ferry to Vancouver Island, where we met Gary. He lives in Courtenay and was returning home. A short conversation with him led to an invitation to hitch a ride to Courtenay with him \u2013 a 300km adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the ride into Courtenay and even driving us right to the car rental place, he extended further hospitality and invited us over to his home to stay for the night. Exhausted from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/on-the-agenda-the-worlds-shortest-ferry-ride\/\">ferry ride<\/a> (see our last post: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-ferry-big-mistake\/\">A Ferry Big Mistake<\/a>) we decided we wouldn\u2019t be very good company and made the push for the west coast instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/visiting-the-quintesssential-tongue-twister\/\">Uclulet<\/a>, we found yet more BC friendliness. Everybody (almost without exception), even passers by in cars, were sure to say hello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we are some of those people; we say hi to everybody we come across. In fact, we even came across a couple that looked at us like we were from Mars when we said hello to them, and we immediately knew they were from Toronto!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post about Vancouver Island was originally published in 2007.
