In Leaving Lisbon on September 1<sup><span class=\"GRcorrect\">st<\/span><\/sup> <span class=\"GRcorrect\">to<\/span> commence the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/the-ultimate-train-challenge-landing-page\/\">Ultimate Train Challenge<\/a>, I have already vowed to return. (It&#8217;s just a matter of when).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2011. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content. <\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After about 12 hours of travel from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/northern-swedish-delicacies-including-surstromming\/\">northern Sweden<\/a>, I arrived in Lisbon on August 30<sup><span class=\"GRcorrect\">th<\/span><\/sup> <span class=\"GRcorrect\">a<\/span> little fatigued but very excited to meet my fellow Ultimate Train Challenge competitors, Michael Hodson of Go See Write, and Jeannie Mark of Nomadic Chick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The setting couldn&#8217;t have been better: Lisbon Destination Hostel\u00a0is \u2013 hands down \u2013 one of the coolest hostels I&#8217;ve been to. The poetry of staying <em>in<\/em> a train station (and amazingly not hearing any trains from inside the hostel) was almost too much for us, and the oasis of quiet amidst bustling downtown Lisbon was muchly appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p797520892-2.jpg\" alt=\"inside Lisbon Destination Hotel\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>We enjoyed a great dinner and strategy session our first night in a crowded hole-in-the-wall restaurant where nobody spoke English, and I fluked into ordering the best meal of our bunch: Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p1012035073-2.jpg\" alt=\"The First Supper in Lisbon with Nora Dunn, Jeannie Mark, and Michael Hodson on the Ultimate Train Challenge\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The following day was largely a work and planning day for the three of us (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-work-life-balance-time-management-and-the-paradoxes-within\/\">hazard of the occupation<\/a>) in preparation for the Ultimate Train Challenge start. But we were rescued by a journalist named C\u00e9lia, who was interviewing us for some articles she is writing, and who also kindly showed us some of Lisbon&#8217;s jewels. Being a co-author of the book <em>Eat Portugal<\/em>,&nbsp;she was instrumental in making our time in Lisbon a gastronomical event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, we enjoyed a glass of <em><span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">ginjinha<\/span><\/em> \u2013 a sour cherry brandy (cherries and all) that many Portugese <span class=\"GRcorrect\">brew<\/span> in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p591100606-2.jpg\" alt=\"Enjoying ginjinha in Lisbon\" style=\"width:350px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Jeannie and I saw Michael off early on September 1<sup><span class=\"GRcorrect\">st<\/span><\/sup>, as our own first day plans gave us the luxury of the day in Lisbon before boarding an overnight train to Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we got together with C\u00e9lia for&nbsp;<em>past\u00e9is <span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">de<\/span> Bel\u00e9m. <\/em>They are a form of <em>past\u00e9is <span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">de<\/span> <span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">nata<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;(which are Portugal&#8217;s famous custard tarts), and the ones&nbsp;<em><span class=\"GRcorrect\">de<\/span> Bel\u00e9m <\/em>have secret ingredients that even foodies like C\u00e9lia can&#8217;t hack! This one establishment sells an average of 20,000 <em>past\u00e9is <span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">de<\/span> Bel\u00e9m <\/em>every day; a number which swells to over 33,000 per day during their busiest month of August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After eating three \u2013 yes three \u2013 in a row, I know why.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p923176885-2.jpg\" alt=\"past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m in Portugal\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>C\u00e9lia saw us off that afternoon after a great day of sightseeing, with promises to reconnect, and offers to stay with her if (when?) we return. I cautioned her \u2013 as I do to anybody who offers up their place to me \u2013 that she&#8217;d best be careful what she offers, since I&#8217;m the sort of gal who will actually take her up on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our last dinner in Lisbon was at the hostel; a family affair with staff, some guests, wine, and three delicious courses prepared by an <span class=\"GRcorrect\">Argentian<\/span> chef. When I asked what the special occasion was, I was told that this happens every night at the hostel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Every night!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was assured, however, that most often it&#8217;s only a one course affair (<em>only!)<\/em>, and tonight was a \u201ctryout\u201d of sorts for this chef (who, incidentally, was hired on the spot as soon as we bit into <span class=\"GRcorrect\">first course<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between getting along famously with my Ultimate Train Challenge <span class=\"GRnoSuggestion GRcorrect\">compadres<\/span>, befriending C\u00e9lia and getting her gastronomical \u201cinside scoop\u201d to Lisbon, and enjoying the welcoming vibe of Lisbon Destination Hostel, I know I must return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s just a matter of when.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ah, the food, the people, the ambiance, the life.
