{"id":2879,"date":"2011-09-07T06:00:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T11:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/?p=2879"},"modified":"2024-06-19T07:38:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T11:38:39","slug":"tapas-mountains-flamenco-and-siestas-this-is-granada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/tapas-mountains-flamenco-and-siestas-this-is-granada\/","title":{"rendered":"Tapas, Mountains, Flamenco, and Siestas: This is Granada!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/leaving-lisbon\/\">leaving Lisbon<\/a>, my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/category\/ultimate-train-challenge\/\">Ultimate Train Challenge<\/a>\u00a0adventures in Spain were to start with breakfast in Madrid, lunch in Seville, and dinner in Granada. In theory, it all sounded very civilized until I was caught in a vicious downpour in Seville with no raincoat, a good 20 minutes from the train station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what&#8217;s a girl to do? Why, stop in the nearest cafe for <span class=\"GRcorrect\">tapas<\/span>, of course!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2011. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content. <\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p159249775-2.jpg\" alt=\"tapas in Seville\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d have walked by this place a million times had it been sunny, so given the glorious <span class=\"GRcorrect\">tapas<\/span> I enjoyed while pouring through maps to determine my train route through Europe, I&#8217;m glad it was raining.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arriving in Granada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I received a warm welcome from Nellie of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildjunket.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Wild Junket<\/a>&nbsp;and her husband Alberto, who hosted me for my three glorious days in southern Spain. We later determined that we&#8217;ve known each other online since early 2008 when she lived in Singapore \u2013 my, how time flies. What a joy it is to now know them in person and count them as friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first night was a whirlwind tour of <span class=\"GRcorrect\">tapas<\/span> and the charming town of Granada, complete with its steep narrow cobblestone streets, Moroccan tea shops, and the gorgeous Alhambra. (I couldn&#8217;t help but perpetually giggle at the thought of being in front of <span class=\"GRcorrect\">Alhambra<\/span>, as <em>Alhambra<\/em> is also a board game I love to play, similar to <em>Carcassonne<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/carcassonne-more-than-just-a-game\/\">a game I&#8217;ve played and a place I visited last year<\/a> when my Mum joined me on a vacation in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p63954124-2.jpg\" alt=\"Granada and the Alhambra\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br \/>Mountains of Granada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagining southern Spain, somehow I constructed a picture in my mind that was devoid of elevation. So when the train pulled into Granada \u2013 which is surrounded by mountains \u2013 I was both surprised and pleased, since mountain hiking is one of my <span class=\"GRcorrect\">favourite<\/span> activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So on my second day in Granada, we went hiking in the <em>Sierra Nevada<\/em> range (which translates to \u201csnowy range\u201d in English). This leads to my second surprise about Granada, which is that it can get quite chilly here in the winter; so much so that skiing is popular in the <em>Sierra Nevadas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p641687502-2.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking the Sierra Nevada with Nellie\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br \/>Flamenco<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some would say the birthplace of Flamenco in Spain is Seville, Alberto (a Grenada native) got a strange look on his face when I suggested that was the case. I imagine there&#8217;s some debate among Spaniards about the true home of Flamenco dancing; a beautiful passionate art that has a life of its own. I would love to try my hand at Flamenco&#8230;maybe when I return to Spain (whenever that will be).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Flamenco shows are available in \u201ccaves\u201d (both touristy and out of the way) throughout and around Granada, and given my love of dancing, it couldn&#8217;t be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p1071020394-2.jpg\" alt=\"Flamenco - with attitude\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br \/>Siesta Time!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the early-ish dinners I had in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/northern-swedish-delicacies-including-surstromming\/\">Sweden<\/a> (and even Lisbon), the switch to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/thoughts-on-and-many-pictures-of-spain\/\">\u201cSpanish time\u201d<\/a>\u00a0required an adjustment. Eating before 10pm isn&#8217;t commonly done, and it was only on my departure from Spain that I had finally started to relax into this groove, which \u2013 of course \u2013 includes <em>siestas <\/em>(afternoon naps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we drove through beautifully precarious mountain towns on our way home from our hike (and enroute to a <em>siesta<\/em> before dinner), I wondered why the towns were deserted. With shutters on all the windows and almost nobody to be seen, it looked like nobody lived there. I surmised that these towns were mainly comprised of holiday homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p861058986-2.jpg\" alt=\"quiet street in Granada Spain - where is everybody?\" width=\"450\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>But even populated areas of Granada were quiet and empty in the late afternoon. That&#8217;s when I understood the extent to which <em>siestas<\/em> really are a part of Spanish culture. The window shutters aren&#8217;t for storm protection when leaving a place for an extended period of time (as you see with many holiday homes) \u2013 they&#8217;re to shut the light out for a proper <em>siesta<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p925472745-2.jpg\" alt=\"uninvitingly closed shutters\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>I even noticed when we returned home that our own shutters were perpetually half closed, yet still allowing lots of natural light to fill the place. Is a very uninviting look from the outside, but a downright necessity from the inside.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scavenger Hunt Victory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And lucky for me, I managed to bag another Scavenger Hunt&nbsp;item: A photo of me enjoying dinner in somebody&#8217;s home!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\t\t\t<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/p1008717995-2.jpg\" alt=\"Scavenger Hunt find #2: Dinner with Nellie &amp; Alberto\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p>Thank you Nellie and Alberto for your wonderful hospitality. Who knows where in the world we&#8217;ll meet next!<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Onwards from Spain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After leaving Granada, I boarded an overnight train to Barcelona, followed by another overnight train to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/zurich-rural-urbanity\/\">Zurich<\/a>, where I&#8217;m currently visiting with a friend of the family who I&#8217;ve known since childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But alas, this visit will be (too) short, as I must move on to keep up with the Ultimate Train Challenge schedule! After Zurich, I&#8217;ll spend the weekend in Prague, then move on to the Ukraine for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activeukraine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Active Ukraine<\/a>&nbsp;adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I&#8217;m getting ahead of myself.
