I&#8217;ve approximated it to be about 25,000kms of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I sat on these 29 trains a cumulative amount of 339 hours and 50 minutes. That&#8217;s over 14 days \u2013 straight. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My top five train rides for length of riding <span class=\"GRcorrect\">time<\/span> were:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-week-on-the-trans-manchurian-railway\/\">Trans-Manchurian<\/a> (also called the Trans-Siberian) from Moscow to Beijing: 150 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hanoi to Saigon: 35 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prague to Lviv: 23 hours (technically this was two trains, with a one-hour break in between)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shanghai to Guilin: 22 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barcelona to Zurich: 16.5 hours<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Given that I was \u201conly\u201d on trains for 14 days (!), I also had time to check out a few sights in a flurried fashion along the way. Here are some highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p1032491035-2.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon Portugal, where the Ultimate Train Challenge started, 29 trains in 30 days\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I ate my way around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/leaving-lisbon\/\">Lisbon<\/a>&nbsp;Portugal, sampling their heavenly seafood rice and famous&nbsp;<em>past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m<\/em>.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p624306282-2.jpg\" alt=\"Nora Dunn, The Professional Hobo, in Granada Spain, with Al Hambra in the background\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I stayed with Nellie of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wildjunket.com\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Junket<\/a> and her husband Alberto in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/tapas-mountains-flamenco-and-siestas-this-is-granada\/\">Granada, Spain<\/a>, where we hiked, ate tapas, painted the town, and simply enjoyed each others&#8217; company.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt sorry for myself in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/staying-off-the-tourist-trail-or-not-in-barcelona\/\">Barcelona, Spain<\/a> before finally settling firmly ON the beaten path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p770064584-2.jpg\" alt=\"Nora Dunn in Zurich Switzerland eating raclette\" style=\"width:450px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I stayed with a long-lost family friend and her family in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/zurich-rural-urbanity\/\">Zurich, Switzerland<\/a>, and caught up with another friend who treated me to cheesy raclette (yum)!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I reconnected in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/naked-in-prague-at-night\/\">Prague, Czech Republic<\/a> with a group of friends who I met on a tv shoot last year, and I found myself caught off-guard and very much \u201cnaked\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p497833145-2.jpg\" alt=\"A man in Lviv Ukraine with a pigeon on his arm. \" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I hit rock bottom in Lviv, Ukraine before coming up for air and realizing that it&#8217;s a gorgeous place worthy of a future visit.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p279944268-2.jpg\" alt=\"The Professional Hobo in the Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I took a few days to hike in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine (a real highlight of the whole trip), and dug a little bit beneath the surface of the country, experiencing paradoxes like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/the-very-fast-train-is-1-hour-late-and-other-ukrainian-paradoxical-experiences\/\">Very-Fast Train which was One Hour Late<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I reflected on the first half of the trip and braced myself for the second half while in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/flat-in-moscow\/\">Moscow, Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p140925900-2.jpg\" alt=\"Trans-Manchurian Train, from Moscow to Beijing\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I got to know Michael and Jeannie a whole lot better (in a good way!) on the epic one-week journey from Moscow to Beijing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/a-week-on-the-trans-manchurian-railway\/\">Trans-Manchurian train<\/a>.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p383347129-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Great Wall of China\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I came full-circle in my life and travels by unwittingly revisiting the exact spot on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/beijing-then-and-now\/\">Great Wall of China<\/a> that I had been to 18 years prior on my first overseas trip.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p724160148-2.jpg\" alt=\"Guilin river tour\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I wandered further down memory lane in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/guilin-river-culture-and-new-tourism\/\">Guilin, China<\/a> on a river tour that was about 100 times more crowded than I remembered it.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/p548891912-2.jpg\" alt=\"random train Vietnam\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I had a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/13-random-experiences-on-asian-trains\/\">random experiences on Asian trains<\/a> on the long disjointed journey from Beijing, China to southern Vietnam and Saigon \u2013 the final Ultimate Train Challenge destination.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d
