Darcie Connell and Adam Costa are travel writers headed south from Guatemala to the tip of South America. They are the founders of Trekity; a new travel site with over 800 destinations. Please enjoy this week-in-the-life of Darcie and Adam as they wend their way through Central and South America.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is our life and work on the road<\/a>. We travel slowly to focus on work and the world around us without having to chase down accommodations every night and shady internet connects. While some of our days are overwhelmingly fun hiking up volcanoes, walking historic cobble stone streets, and eating cheap and delicious food, the majority of our days are spent behind the neon screens of our laptops, pounding away at the keyboard. A writer has to eat, right?<\/p>\n\n\n

Day One: Wednesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The week is going to be interesting, to say the least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only are my wife Darcie and I planning the successful launch of our new travel site, we\u2019re jet-setting from Guatemala to Miami and then down to Quito, Ecuador. It\u2019s a lot of miles in an admittedly odd direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that\u2019s life: the twists and turns are where the fun lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the straight lines which get me. Staying in one place too long. Eating the same foods. Walking the same routes. Drinking the same booze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know, tough right? After all, this is the life we fought for\u2026and believe me, it was worth every damn punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every trip has its end. And our time in Antigua, Guatemala<\/a> comes to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n

After three months here I\u2019m excited to go\u2026 but there\u2019s a nagging feeling this may have been <\/strong>it<\/strong><\/em>\u2026the place where Darcie and I might drop our backpacks, plant a garden and settle in for, well\u2026ever<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now it\u2019s settled. The tickets are booked. And we leave on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day Two: Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s early. Really<\/em> early. I haven\u2019t been sleeping well \u2013 maybe four hours a night \u2013 and it\u2019s beginning to take its toll. I creep downstairs and read a Robert Ludlum book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darcie, however, sleeps like a champion<\/em>. Eight hours a night like clockwork with the occasional afternoon nap on weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter. Today is gonna be busy, so it\u2019s good I\u2019m up early. After a half hour or so with Patriot Games<\/em> I fire up my cruel mistress: the laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s interesting, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How something can provide so much freedom and yet feel so restricting? As professional hobos (editor’s note \u2013 hey! That’s <\/em>my<\/strong><\/em> schtick!<\/em>) for the past several years I\u2019ve come to rely on my laptop \u2013 and consequently, internet connections \u2013 far more than I care to admit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, the connection in our apartment works, and I\u2019m able to jump into work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This morning, I\u2019m cracking away at a guest post. Since we\u2019re new on the travel blog scene, we\u2019ve got an uphill battle of getting noticed. Darcie contacted hundreds of travel sites this month alone, pitching guest posts and trying to build long-term relationships with those willing to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As people accept the posts, we sit down to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poco a poco <\/em>(little by little), as they say in Antigua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darcie wakes up and we enjoy a cup of coffee. It\u2019s gonna be a long day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day Three: Friday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today something terrible happened. Darcie\u2019s parents’ dog Sadie \u2013 an odd mixture of Labrador and Pit Bull \u2013 passed out during her morning walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trip to the vet revealed she had an enlarged heart and was in extreme pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were putting her down within the hour.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Darcie kept saying was \u201cI wish I could be there\u2026I just wish I could be there\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so did I.<\/p>\n\n\n

Day Four: Saturday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today we fly to Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an odd emotion, leaving. Usually I\u2019m more excited to see somewhere new. Almost always, in fact. But a few places have been hard to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was that bungalow on Ko Lanta. And our high rise apartment in Austin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, Antigua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We clean up the apartment and wait for our shuttle to the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pour two White Russians and we talk about our memories here: the charming Spanish instructors who taught us to speak (decent) Spanish, the wonderful, winding alleyways through colonial ruins and the bright colored alfombras<\/em> (brightly colored carpets made of sawdust) that lined the streets during Semana Santa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you think we\u2019ll ever come back?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe someday,\u201d Darcie replies, \u201cbut not anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day Five: Sunday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everything\u2019s bigger in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hangovers are no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me tell you, last night was rough<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We flew from Guatemala<\/a> to Miami, hopped in not one, not two, but three<\/em> cabs to get to our friends\u2019 hotel on South Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cab fare was more money than a week in Guatemala. Shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We doctored a bottled of whiskey there, then headed out for insanely oversized (and overpriced) cocktails and people-watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miami is an interesting blend of African, Caribbean, Latin and European cultures. Rednecks rarely make it this far south. As locals say about Florida, \u201cThe further north you go, the more southern you get.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wake up early and decide to grab breakfast at the Cuban caf\u00e9 down the street. Sitting there at the caf\u00e9 bar, nursing a Sam Adams (how-I\u2019ve-missed you!)<\/em> and speaking Spanish with Cubans something happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happiness hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My time in Antigua has made me a different person. I can speak another language, which has opened up my world in many, many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words: it\u2019s made me a better person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now we\u2019re headed to South America for six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day Six: Monday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whew. There is\u2026no\u2026air\u2026in\u2026Quito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 9,350 feet (2,850m) you really feel the difference\u2026especially<\/em> when flying from sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we\u2019re glad to be here. It\u2019s a new continent for both of us, and our place is awesome. Seeing that we work from home (wherever that is) we usually live outside of town, where money goes farther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, $900 USD a month gets you a nice three bedroom, three bathroom apartment overlooking the city below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, and a Ping Pong table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today \u2013 I\u2019m sad to say \u2013 is the first time I\u2019ve ever<\/em> been out of breath playing Ping Pong. It must be the elevation, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day Seven: Tuesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

New place, new surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I miss Antigua?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nope. I\u2019ve never missed a place in my life<\/strong>. Seriously. I hate looking back, and Darcie and I are already talking about flying to Buenos Aires in a few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s what we do. It\u2019s who we are. And should we continue moving for the rest of our lives, so be it. I could see us in our mid-sixties, still wandering the earth (you know, like Cain from Kung Fu) always in search of something new, something exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that image of the garden? It\u2019s still there, waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n
