Nora. That&#8217;s not cheap\u201d. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>And you&#8217;d be right. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>Scroll down for a monthly breakdown of my travel (and life) expenses, and an explanation for the increasing trend. The high cost of transportation came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/unique-transportation-ode-to-the-scooter\/\">buying a scooter<\/a>, which would pay for itself in less than a year of the household <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/unique-transportation-buses-in-grenada\/\">riding the bus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The large business expense reflects the deposit paid for my website redesign, and the insurance expense is my annual premium for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/expat-insurance-travel-insurance-for-full-time-and-long-term-travelers\/\">expat insurance<\/a>. What happened?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>My cost of full-time travel in 2012 was more than $10,000 higher than the the previous few years of full-time travels.<\/b> There are a few reasons for this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-92c47d7a-956f-4b40-b6e6-80b1b87cd930\">\n<li>I took quite a few flights this year, some of which were uncharacteristically short trips for me (such as my week-long trip from Grenada to Toronto).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I invested into my business with site redesigns and new ventures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I spent time in urban areas like Zurich, Paris, London, and Toronto \u2013 which always means I spend more money.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I incorporated my life with that of a partner. This has meant a bit of extra spending in the throes of heady love.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;ve always maintained that \u201cliving\u201d in one place is more expensive than traveling full-time, and the increased housing and food expenses in the last few months of 2012 have proven that to be true.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, as you saw in my post detailing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/financially-sustainable-travel-my-2012-income\/\">2012 Income<\/a>, you&#8217;ll see that <strong>my income also made a big jump in 2012. Thus, I felt quite at liberty to treat myself to spending more money in tandem.<\/strong> I bought high-quality groceries (and Switzerland was a hot-bed for wonderful food), treated myself to clothes and personal effects, and heck \u2013 if I wanted lobster (and the price was right), I had lobster.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Apologies<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/p1259017618-3.jpg\" alt=\"green broad leaf with water droplets\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I won&#8217;t apologize for not keeping my cost of full-time travel spending in the \u201cbudget traveler\u201d range. <b>This site is about financially sustainable travel<\/b>; in the first few years of traveling and building my business I didn&#8217;t have much income, so I had to get creative in keeping my travel expenses within my income range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now, with more income coming in, I am reaping the benefits of the blood, sweat, and tears I&#8217;ve poured into my freelance writing career, and I&#8217;m rewarding myself for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m still spending within my means, hence I&#8217;m financially sustainable. <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-create-a-long-term-travel-budget-financially-sustainable-travel\/\">\u201cFinancially sustainable\u201d doesn&#8217;t need to mean \u201ccheap\u201d<\/a>. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My travel style has changed with establishing a home base in Grenada, but it doesn&#8217;t mean I&#8217;ll stop traveling \u2013 and you can almost always bet I&#8217;ll still be doing it in a creative and low-cost way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <i>life happens while we&#8217;re busy making plans<\/i>; who knows what the future will bring.
