Anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, just about. Including all kinds of things I never knew I (or anybody else) needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2014. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content. <\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Expect at Barratio Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was expecting Barratio to be a flea market. But it&#8217;s much more than a flea market. For starters, it&#8217;s more of a neighbourhood. The maze of streets is crammed with makeshift stalls and setups, with vendors selling anything from new and used clothes and shoes, to electronics, artisan crafts, spare parts, and even severed doll heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>Yes, severed doll heads.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p483898108-3.jpg\" alt=\"Barratio market offerings, including doll heads and rollerblade wheels\" width=\"350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rollerblade wheels, extra cables, and severed doll heads: what more could a person want?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are a few more of the random things I spotted at Barratio market:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p74247195-3.jpg\" alt=\"Stand at Barratio Market in Cusco Peru\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Get yer red hot used car ashtrays right here!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p379688870-3.jpg\" alt=\"cogs and wool for sale at Barratio\" width=\"350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anybody want a cog?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p3442602-3.jpg\" alt=\"Peruvian market in Cusco, with a dead lamb hanging\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I&#8217;m not sure what purpose this little limp lamb serves&#8230;nor the donkey head I saw just down the street from it&#8230;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p194214479-3.jpg\" alt=\"cooking tool demonstrations at Barratio flea market\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Just like attending a trade show, some shopkeepers don microphones and extol the benefits of their product, like this woman showing all the amazing things her kitchen gizmo can do.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p455657061-3.jpg\" alt=\"alpaca wool and blankets for sale in Cusco\" width=\"350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A few streets in the Barratio market area are filled with local crafts intrinsic to Cusco \u2013 beautiful weavings, alpaca yarn and clothes, and more.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br \/>\u201cBe Careful in Barratio\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was well prepared for the fray before I arrived. Absolutely everybody I mentioned Barratio market to immediately told me that it&#8217;s rampant with thieves and that I was to be careful with my personal belongings. Best not to bring a purse with you at all, and instead to keep anything valuable tucked away in an inside pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I saw no evidence of petty criminals, indeed the crush of people at Barratio market was such that I was glad not to have to worry about my purse.&nbsp;<em>(Incidentally I had my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/my-purse-was-stolen-lessons-learned\/\">purse stolen in Cusco<\/a> a few months after the writing of this post, but it wasn&#8217;t at Barratio, and it was a learning experience).&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I found more kindness than danger; I went with a friend who brought a backpack that had a broken zipper. She was stopped by good samaritans who said \u201c<i>guarda, guarda<\/i>\u201d (guard your things), pointing to the open pocket on her backpack.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you Like Street Food, go to Barratio Hungry<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p468984228-3.jpg\" alt=\"roving food vendors at Barratio\" width=\"450\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Want a bite to eat? There are people walking around the Barratio market, peddling their home-cooked goods, which are kept warm in their buckets and bags insulated with blankets. Others are set up with large pots on single propane burners and a few plastic stools so you can \u201crelax\u201d and enjoy your food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s simple, but the food is delicious.&nbsp;<em>(See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/street-food-in-peru-and-around-the-world\/\">Street Food in Peru<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p426515005-3.jpg\" alt=\"alfajores vendor\" width=\"350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">These little goodies called alfajores are my favourites: two shortbread-like cookies with dulce de leche (caramel) in the middle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/p484854333-3.jpg\" alt=\"Andean woman selling lunch at a busy market in Cusco\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This dish was particularly delicious: a mystery meat with tasty greens, potatoes, and some steamed choclo (giant corn).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><i><b>Where is the craziest flea market you&#8217;ve been to in the world?<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barratio market in Cusco is much more than a flea market&#8230;it&#8217;s an experience.
