Although we all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-to-become-fluent-in-spanish-and-other-languages\/\">speak the same language<\/a> in that we can (usually) order a burger and fries without much ado, at the same time we really <strong>don\u2019t<\/strong> speak the same language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve been baffled by heavily-accented fast-talking Outbackers, confused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/fair-dinkum-explored-meaning-and-origination\/\">sayings about drinking<\/a>, and stumped by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/more-things-that-make-australia-unique\/\">terminology<\/a> left right and centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But one thing Aussies do well is utilize a full \u2013 and fully confusing at times \u2013 collection of phrases to express pleasure. Here are just a few:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post was originally published in 2009. It has since been updated for accuracy of links and content.\u00a0<\/em><br \/><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/australian-abbreviations\/\">Australian Abbreviations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/canadian-versus-australian-coins\/\">Canadian versus Australian Coins<\/a>. <br \/><\/em><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sweet As!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sweet as what, you may ask? The expression is more about the use of \u201cas\u201d, since I\u2019ve also heard \u201chard as\u201d, \u201ceasy as\u201d, \u201cgross as\u201d, and numerous other descriptive words to fit the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And like many Aussie phrases and words, it is indeed a shortened sentence, the ending being implied. So what is the ending, you ask? Well, it depends on who you talk to and how crass they are. The tamest version I\u2019ve heard yet is \u201csweet as\u2026all heck\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Can you imagine my shock when I learned of the meaning and realized I hear old ladies say \u201csweet as\u201d all the time.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>That\u2019s Grouse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When I first heard this (after I had been enlightened on the whole \u201cas\u201d situation), I thought that maybe people were saying \u201cgreat as\u201d. But as different people said it, it just didn\u2019t seem to fit. I wondered if I was hearing a slurry version of \u201cgross\u201d, but most people were enthusiastic when they said it. And I\u2019m pretty sure they weren\u2019t talking about the bird kind of grouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No, grouse has a definition all its own, but it basically means \u201cgreat\u201d.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bloody Oath!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Yikes \u2013 that\u2019s some violent stuff. People must mean whatever they\u2019re saying if they say \u201cbloody oath\u201d. And they do; they mean an exaggerated version of \u201cthat\u2019s for certain\u201d.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ripper, Corker<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both these words are descriptive terms for \u201cgreat\u201d. \u201cThis bottle of wine is a ripper\u201d is the first time I heard it in action. What I love about both these words is how the Australian accent turns \u201cer\u201d phonetically into \u201cah\u201d. \u201cThis dinner is a rippah and that dessert is a corkah\u201d: it\u2019s so much more fun to say it the Aussie way!<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>She\u2019ll be Apples<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I can\u2019t help but smile when I hear this expression. It\u2019s another incantation of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/shell-be-right-mate-words-to-live-by\">she\u2019ll be right<\/a>\u201d, which carries with it a way of thinking unto itself.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"MsoNormal wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cooee!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This word is not an expression of pleasure per se, though I couldn\u2019t help but include it for my love of its origin. It is traditionally sung in a high-pitched voice to gain somebody\u2019s attention, and is originally an aboriginal custom (but is now used by many Aussies). Start with the \u201ccoo\u201d at a medium to high tone, then finish off by tossing off the \u201cee\u201d in a falsetto pitch. It may initially feel ridiculous, but trust me \u2013 it is infectious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Because it was traditionally used as a way to communicate over long distances, cooee is now considered a benchmark. If something is \u201cwithin cooee distance\u201d, it is close enough for you to hear somebody cooee-ing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Coo-ee! It\u2019s great fun. Or maybe I should say it\u2019s a rippah, a corkah, sweet as, or grouse. Either way, she\u2019ll be apples. Bloody oath. Hope you enjoyed these Australian expressions of pleasure.
