I got vaccinated and boosted (despite a seething dislike of needles), and I don&#8217;t subscribe to conspiracy theories in general<\/em>.<em> What I&#8217;m referring to here are getting ALL the travel vaccines you could possibly need before ever leaving your home country. I think that is overkill, and I think there&#8217;s an element of unnecessary fear that is instilled in people about the world outside one&#8217;s home country&#8217;s borders being inherently dangerous. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years ago (in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/how-i-became-the-professional-hobo-part-i-the-dream-the-decision\/\">pre-Professional-Hobo days<\/a>), I took a vacation to South Africa. Knowing I&#8217;d be in malaria-land and visiting various spots with potential for exotic ailments, I visited a travel clinic in Canada and asked what I needed to do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor gave me a list of \u201chighly recommended\u201d vaccinations, including (but not limited to) the full range of hepatitis shots, malaria medication, and a yellow fever shot just for good measure. In addition to the travel clinic visit charges, this amounted to hundreds of dollars in vaccinations requiring multiple visits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I balked at the hepatitis vaccination regime, the doctor put a map of the world in front of me.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the blue countries on this map are countries that have a hepatitis problem. So really, if you want to travel anywhere at all, you should have these vaccines,\u201d he said, logically.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just about every country on the map was blue, except for North America.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I told a friend visiting from the UK what happened, he said \u201cIsn&#8217;t that funny. Before I started my trip, I went to a travel clinic in the UK. They put that same map in front of me! Except every country on my map was blue except for Europe!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hmm.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis exists around the world. Granted in some countries it&#8217;s more of a going concern than in others. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why the push for vaccinations only if we travel? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could just be that that\u2019s when people are asking about vaccines, so that\u2019s when it comes up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a conspiracy theorist could have a field day with this topic, with suggestions of travel vaccinations not only being a money-grab, but also wider theories about the alternate agendas of pharmaceutical companies, or even certain societal \u201cfear mongering\u201d tactics about travel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not a conspiracy theorist, but neither will I totally dismiss the idea that not all travel vaccinations are recommended with our best intentions as the first priority.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll admit, when I walked into the travel clinic before my trip to South Africa, I was already leery of travel vaccinations. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years prior, a friend of mine was going to Africa to do some aid work. She got all the recommended travel vaccinations (which were many), and then, because of a complication with one of the vaccinations, she spent six months paralyzed from the waist down. I don&#8217;t know the specifics of what happened, but was led to believe that it was a rare complication that can occur with one of the vaccinations she got.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world of playing the odds (as we do), you might say she had a greater chance of contracting whatever disease she was being vaccinated against, than experiencing this complication \u2013 thus validating the vaccination. But if the chances of contracting said disease was remote to begin with, and especially after hearing of this story, it made me wonder how wholly necessary many travel vaccinations are to begin with.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I decided to do some research.<\/span><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-a-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a vaccine?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/topics\/vaccines\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According the the World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO), a vaccine is \u201ca biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism, and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body&#8217;s immune system to recognize the agent as foreign, destroy it, and &#8220;remember&#8221; it, so that the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it later encounters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So basically, when you get a flu vaccine, they\u2019re giving you an inert version of the flu, so that, if you encounter flu bacteria in your day-to-day life later on, your body can recognize it easily and overcome it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also why some people feel \u201cflu-y\u201d after getting a flu shot. No, the vaccine didn\u2019t give you the flu. It\u2019s just your immune system learning how to respond to the disease. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/travel-insurance-guide\/\">Everything You Need to Know about Travel Insurance<\/a>, complete with  full glossary of terms in plain language<\/em><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"categories\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Different Categories of Vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three different categories of travel vaccinations that you\u2019ll encounter: routine, recommended, and required. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this section, I go over the three categories and the common vaccinations you often find in each one. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Routine Vaccines<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us remember getting our booster shots as kids. It\u2019s thanks to these that diseases like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamat.org\/blog\/travel-and-polio-eradication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only exist in history books in most of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But depending on what year you were vaccinated and what vaccines were available at the time, where you grew up, or what your parents believed, you may or may not have received all the routine vaccinations that are given to kids today. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many of these diseases are still a problem in some countries, depending on where you\u2019re traveling and if you got these routine vaccinations as a kid, your doctor may recommend these vaccinations before you go on your trip.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routine vaccinations often recommended to travelers (for booster or renewal or to make sure they got it in the first place) include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TDaP (Tetanus, Diptheria, Purtusiss)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measles, Mumps, Rubella<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polio<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis A<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis B<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or Twinrix (Hepatitis A and B at the same time)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Recommended Travel Vaccines<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on where you are traveling, certain vaccines not on the routine list may be recommended. These are often the vaccines that come to mind when you think of \u201ctravel vaccines\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonly recommended travel vaccines, depending on destination, can include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoid fever<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaria (medication, not vaccine)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabies<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholera<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meningitis<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese Encephalitis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Required Travel Vaccinations<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2018\/infectious-diseases-related-to-travel\/yellow-fever-malaria-information-by-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on where you travel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may require evidence of some travel vaccinations; <\/span><b>yellow fever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a prime example. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you&#8217;ve just been to a country with a yellow fever problem (which includes much of South America and Africa), you might be required to show proof of vaccination before entering, or when entering other countries afterwards. Apparently it&#8217;s rarely requested, but occasionally required.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you&#8217;re planning on chilling in parts of the Amazon where yellow fever is a problem, you may well want this vaccination for both legal ease and peace of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#top\">Back to top ^<\/a><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential Risks of Vaccinations<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any medical procedure, vaccinations can carry risk. The story of my friend who experienced temporary paralysis is an example. It\u2019s up to you to weigh the risk of side effects against the risk of contracting a (potentially deadly) disease. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different vaccinations have different potential side effects, so it\u2019s important to do your research.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC has a thorough <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vac-gen\/side-effects.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide to all potential side effects of 27 different vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with their likelihood. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome (GBS)<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s go back to the story about my friend and her temporary paralysis. There are lots of stories on the news and in the grapevine these days about vaccines causing paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out, it may have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Guillain-Barr%C3%A9-Syndrome-Fact-Sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome (GBS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rare neurological disorder that affects about one person in 100,000. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically with GBS, your immune system gets confused and attacks your own nervous system. This can cause anything ranging from weakness to full blown paralysis, but fortunately, it\u2019s temporary and most people recover. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Guillain-Barr%C3%A9-Syndrome-Fact-Sheet#3139_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the exact cause of GBS is unknown, but in some cases it seems to be triggered by infections, and in rare cases, vaccinations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Incorrectly Administered Vaccine (SIRVA)<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having problems with your arm or shoulder, it may have to do with where the shot was administered on your arm, rather than the actual vaccine. This is often called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/shoulder-pain-after-vaccine-injection-sirva-2549798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIRVA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/investigations\/Half-of-All-New-Federal-Vaccine-Injury-Cases-Allege-Shots-Given-Incorrectly-481441201.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half of the cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the vaccine court in the U.S. are from SIRVA injuries rather than problems with the vaccines themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To try to prevent this, make sure you wear a shirt you can pull up the sleeve on, rather than pulling your shirt down (only exposing the high part of your arm). Also make sure that the person administering your shot is trained. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Allergic Reactions to Vaccines<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also possible to have an allergic reaction to your vaccine. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an egg, yeast, or latex allergy, make sure you\u2019re getting vaccine brands that don\u2019t have these allergens in the ingredients. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Institute for Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinesafety.edu\/components-allergens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">table that lists the brands of vaccines that have certain allergens in them<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#top\">Back to top ^<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Getting-a-travel-immunization-shot-600x403.jpg\" alt=\"Getting a travel immunization shot\" class=\"wp-image-11901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Getting-a-travel-immunization-shot-600x403.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Getting-a-travel-immunization-shot-768x516.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Getting-a-travel-immunization-shot-1024x688.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Getting-a-travel-immunization-shot.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"commonly-recommended\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonly Recommended Vaccinations for Travelers<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Typhoid Fever<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/typhoid-fever\/about\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/typhoid-fever\/sources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a gastro-intestinal bacterial infection. It spreads through contaminated food and water, commonly in countries with poor hygiene and sewage. For example, if sewage contaminated with the bacteria gets into the water you drink or was used to wash your veggies. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoid affects about 22 million people worldwide. If you do contract it and you recover, you can still spread the disease after you\u2019ve recovered. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For tips on traveling through countries where the water isn\u2019t potable, check this post out: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprofessionalhobo.com\/dealing-parasites-guide-clean-water-around-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealing With Parasites: A Guide to Clean Water Around the World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southeast Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and Western Pacific countries in areas where there is poor water and sewage sanitation<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Malaria<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is spread from nighttime-biting female mosquitoes that don\u2019t leave a welt (so you may not even know you\u2019ve been bitten). Symptoms are flu-like, including high fever and chills. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s prevented not by vaccine, but with medication that only protects you as long as you\u2019re taking it. Some malaria medication also requires you to take it for a certain amount of time prior to arriving and after leaving your destination. If you don\u2019t take it for the full course, you can be at risk. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose your malaria medication\/brand carefully and do your research; some brands of malaria medication carry potent side effects; other brands nullify birth control pills (even beyond the time you are taking the malaria medication). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malaria endemic areas in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Rabies<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/about\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/specific_groups\/travelers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is found everywhere (except Antarctica), so you may wonder why you\u2019d need it specifically for traveling. This vaccine might be recommended if you\u2019re traveling to a place with a large wild dog population or where there hasn\u2019t been a strong dog-vaccination program. It\u2019s also recommended if you\u2019ll be in rural areas or working with animals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parts of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Cholera<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may know it as the disease from the beginning of The Secret Garden, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/diseases\/cholera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still a problem in some countries. It spreads through contaminated food and water. The fluid loss from the symptoms can lead to severe dehydration. Travelers with suppressed immune systems or reduced stomach acid production (like if you take antacids or smoke cannabis) are particularly susceptible. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some nations in Africa, as well as Bangladesh, India, Yemen, and Haiti<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Polio<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t gotten a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/diseases\/poliomyelitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shot since you were a kid, some doctors recommend getting a booster as an adult before going to areas with polio risk or where polio is still an endemic problem. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polio-endemic countries Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan and possibly their neighboring countries (<a href=\"https:\/\/polioeradication.org\/where-we-work\/polio-endemic-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see updated list of endemic countries here<\/a>)<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Meningitis<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several different types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamat.org\/risks\/meningococcal-meningitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meningitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they all target your brain and nervous system in your spinal cord. It can cause death in 5% to 10% of patients even if they get treatment right away. Outbreaks can occur anywhere, but the highest rate of infection happens in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/diseases\/meningococcal-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmeningitis belt\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sub-saharan Africa. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countries with areas in the meningitis-belt of Africa (<\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2018\/infectious-diseases-related-to-travel\/meningococcal-disease#5227\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see map here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Japanese Encephalitis<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another mosquito-spread disease, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/diseases\/japanese-encephalitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese encephalitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is most common in rural areas of Asia. It\u2019s also higher risk in tropical and sub-tropical areas year-round, and in northern Asia is a high risk only in summer and fall. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended for: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southeast Asia and Asia (<\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/japaneseencephalitis\/maps\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see map here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><br \/><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Yellow Fever<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/diseases\/yellow-fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow fever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a virus spread (once again) from mosquito bites. Now you\u2019re ready to get vaccinated!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you get this done at least a few weeks before your trip, especially for the super important\/necessary ones like yellow fever (where they might not even let you into the country). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the different places you can go to get your travel vaccinations:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Regular Healthcare Providers in Your Home Country<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking to your family doctor about your trip is a good idea. They\u2019re already familiar with your health history. If they don\u2019t have the vaccines you need in stock or can\u2019t get them, they\u2019ll be able to refer you to a place that does. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many hospitals and county health departments stock travel vaccines, and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walgreens.com\/topic\/immunization-services\/travel-health.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walgreens offers travel vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their in-store pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A Travel Clinic in Your Home Country<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also go to a private travel clinic that focuses strictly on travel-related health. You can find one through the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.istm.org\/AF_CstmClinicDirectory.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Society of Travel Medicine directory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, be warned, a lot of these clinics use scare tactics to get you to take every vaccination imaginable for your destination (like in my story from earlier). That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to do your research ahead of time. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A Clinic or Doctor Abroad<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I took off to travel full-time, I didn\u2019t know all the places I\u2019d visit (I still don\u2019t). Thus, given that I already didn\u2019t think much of travel vaccinations, I didn\u2019t get anything before I left Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I later discovered that travel clinics exist all over the world; if you need a vaccination along the way, you can get it as and when you need it \u2013 often costing much less than you\u2019d pay at a travel clinic at home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As convenient (and budget-friendly) as these may be, it\u2019s important to make sure that these are reputable, high-quality health care providers. Depending on where you are, there may be clinics with outdated, old, or ineffective medicines that aren\u2019t up to standard.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve never used them before, but IAMAT has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamat.org\/medical-directory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free membership program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gives access to their directory of vetted, English-speaking doctors around the world.
